“words are things. You must be careful, careful about calling people out of their names, using racial, sexual pejoratives. don’t do that. Words are things. They get on the walls. they get in your rugs, and on your clothes, and finally into you”. Dr. Maya Angelou
this is a letter reposted from the blog called dearlilyjune. I immediately fell in love with this letter because when starting this blog to inspire people to have a compassionate and loving relationship with their bodies, I wondered whether I was naive. Naive in the sense that I didn’t really know what it is like to struggle to like your body if you are living with an autoimmune disease, if you’re living with a disability, if you are transgender. I don’t have that experience, so how do I create the space in which all people can explore that compassionate relationship? That is why love letters are so important to this blog. Because publishing them allows you the reader and I to hear it straight from the person experiencing these difficulties. We can all learn about what it’s like to love a body that sometimes fails you, that is sometimes trying to kill you in its attempt to survive, or living in a body that people feel entitled to police or abuse. I hope you find this letter as delightful and uplifting as it is heartbreaking.
